Dengue Fever

Dengue Fever is a mosquito-borne infectious disease found in more than 110 countries. It is mainly spread by mosquitoes of the Aedes type, mainly A. aegypti

Female mosquitoes spread the virus during the early morning and in the evening. The onset of the disease occurs between 3 and 14 days after the bite.

Symptoms

The usual flu-like symptoms appearing 3-14 day after the bite include fever, headaches, joint pain, nausea, vomiting or a rash.

In rare cases, people with dengue fever develop dengue hemorrhagic fever symptoms a few days after the bite, including bleeding from nose or gum, fatigue, severe abdominal pain, constant vomiting and difficulties breathing.

Although severe dengue can lead to the deadly dengue shock syndrome, almost all persons affected survive with proper medical care.

Prevention & Treatment

As there is no specific antiviral treatment, supportive care with analgesics, fluid replacement and bed rest usually prove sufficient for uncomplicated dengue fever.

For the severe form of the disease, patients are usually monitored in an intensive care unit.

If you suspect you have dengue fever, seek immediate medical treatment and mention that you have travelled to a dengue fever zone.

It is essential to use the appropriate skin repellent to prevent mosquito bites in affected regions.
